Hello, Insomnia, my old friend

Hello, my pretties! How are you all doing? Well, I hope!

I’ve been doing as well as it is to be expected. I’ve been feeling better and better every day, and, today, I took a leap of faith and allowed my mom’s hairdresser to chop off most of my previously very long hair. You can see the results of the little adventure on my Twitter, @Miss_JaySouza

All right, with that out of the way, let us go to the theme I’ve selected for today’s post, shall we?

I’ve lived with insomnia basically since I can remember. Or, more properly, a general inability to sleep well at night. I’ve always been a night owl, since I was a baby. As a baby, I’d sleep easily during the day and stay awake at night. As a young child, school happened in the morning, and it was torture. I have studied in the morning and woken up early my entire life – and I still had a very hard time sleeping at night, no matter how tired I was.

I’m 36 years old now. (Shut up, I’m not old!) And I still live this way. I wake up early from Monday to Friday to work, and work all day, which means I should technically sleep at night. Should. I still stay up all night if left to my own devices. 

So, I don’t leave myself to my own devices, and try to get some aid in managing to fall asleep. They are as follows: (Note that I’m not an expert on anything, I’m just sharing what I do to help myself fall asleep when I need to be sleeping)

1- A warm shower before bed always helps me relax.

2- Some small acts of self-care, such as getting moisturizer on my face, hands and feet, also help me prepare for bed.

3- Drinking a glass of water always helps me as well.

4- Keeping a pleasant temperature in the room is very important too.

5- ASMR videos (I’ll talk about them in more detail on a future post) are also a great help.

6- A few games help me unwind and fall asleep as well – I’ll probably share which ones in the future if you’d like me to.

7- Last, but not least, if nothing else works, I get up and go do something else until I feel like going back to bed.

Well, I guess that’s all I have to share right now. I guess I’ll go back to doing pretty much nothing and sleeping a bit – hopefully.

  1. It sounds like you’re a night owl. I typically don’t have a problem going to sleep, but sometimes it happens. It’s especially bad on Sunday nights. I let myself stay up late and sleep in on Friday/Saturday into Sunday morning. Then Sunday evening I can’t fall asleep. Once in a while, though, it happens on any given night. Most times I just “grin and bear it”. Other times, though, I do like you said. I get back up or stay up if I haven’t gone to bed yet. I read or watch some TV until I think I am ready to fall asleep. If I write or try to play a game, there’s NO WAY I’m going to bed any time soon. I would think that if it’s a regular thing (insomnia, that is), I would find a way to deal by taking a nap when I get home from work, eating a late dinner and go to bed when I’m tired. It’s not ideal, but I would think you would be less deprived of sleep overall if you are getting some sort of sleep when you are tired… good luck.

    1. Hey there! I’d say you’re right. I’m probably just wired this way, which I guess sometimes happens. And I do try to get some sleep in during the day – lunch break, as soon as I’m done with work, etc -, and catch up a bit on the zzz’s during the weekends. In a normal situation, I would advise against it, as it would probably interfere with night sleeping, but for someone who already has a hard time sleeping at night in general, I guess we take what we can get. x.x

  2. UGH I can relate. My natural circadian rhythm has me going to bed at 12-1 am and waking up at 7 or 8. That doesn’t go with a *normal* 8-5 schedule. Plus, I’m a zombie in the morning and I like to slowly wake up with a cup of coffee and the internet. I can’t just hop out of bed and zoom away. And many times, I go to bed on time but still lie there blinking and unable to drop off. I think a lot of that is from anxiety. A regular meditation practice has helped with that.

    Your routine sounds like good sleep hygiene. If I make a routine before bed, it cues my body that it’s time to sleep, which I find helps with my insomnia. Mine especially includes going to bed and getting up at the same time EVERY morning, not just during the week.

    Of course right now my whole schedule is off thanks to unemployment and the holidays, but I’m working on getting back to it, LOL.

I’m sort of glad to see that I’m not alone, though it sucks that other people are suffering through being night owls and having to pretend they’re early birds. x.x I’m mostly a zombie up to around 10 am, which sucks when you start work at 7:30 am. I try to go to bed at 11 pm tops, but actually sleeping is a whole other deal and it usually happens much later.

      The routine has helped, I have to say, but it’s still not in my wiring to sleep at night and wake up in the morning.

      I feel you so much on the holidays messing with the schedule. I slept during the day to my heart’s content, and I’m still paying the price. Hope you kick unemployment’s butt soon!

  3. I’m a night owl and had chronic insomnia for years beginning when I was a child. It was tricky to fix–I think it was a combo of treating my depression and anxiety and being on helpful antidepressants for a long time that did it in in the end–and it took a *long* time. I’m a lot better now (excepting particularly stressful times in my life), but I need to pay attention to sleep routines to maintain it. I deliberately wind down before bed, avoid blue-screen-light, do not read new books (re-reading books is helpful though) before bed, etc. (this sort of thing wasn’t enough to fix it when it was a problem–I tried).

    1. Hey there! Thanks for sharing your routine. Blue light actually doesn’t bother me when it comes to sleeping (white light actually bothers me much more), but I really have to get better about not reading anything new before bed, otherwise I’ll definitely stay awake all night. Thanks for the tip! :)
